Cheshire
Howland, our
site name, is a combination of ideas.
Years ago we found
our Smiling Tree in our front yard.
We named
it Cheshire for the Smiling Cheshire Cat
and Howland for
the pilgrim, John Howland.
Later, there was also Ester
Howland, Valentine manufacturer.
It
seems John Howland fell overboard off the ship, Mayflower
(which had
departed from Holland and England)
He had
clung to a halyard and was rescued
at sea
before arriving in America in 1620. And we are thankful.
Also 'how'
is the American Indian word for hello, therefore, Howland.
So Pilgrim dive
right in. Discovery!
